'ACCOMMODATION' IS NOW ENTITLEMENT
At first we relied on our sense of sympathy to accommodate
the handicapped, now its law!
I’m old enough to remember when local shops and businesses began posting ‘Handicapped Parking Only’ signs on a few of their parking spaces. This was a courtesy based on sympathy with the physically afflicted. It was nice and it showed a little piece of the American spirit.
Today in the 21st Century we find a horrible exaggeration of ‘entitlement’ in that those ‘Handicapped Parking Only’ signs have become law. Today what was once an act of sympathy has become law. The ADA [Americans with Disabilities Act] has crippled the spirit of charity and turned it into a mandated entitlement!
When I go to the hardware store I see that virtually every space within 50 feet of the front doors is a ‘Special’ parking place. Whether reserved for the handicapped or the pregnant it just grinds my gears! When was the last time you saw someone in a wheelchair in a builder’s supply store?
The worst part is that the handicapped have become surly and self-centred as they ‘expect’ and even ‘demand’ this courtesy. I recently watched a handicapped guy go off on someone else because his truck was about 1 foot into a ‘Handicap Parking Only’ space. This huge pickup truck wasn’t impeding anyone’s ability to use this extra long and extra wide space for his wheelchair friendly van. There were about 8 more special spaces right beside this one, a mark of the ADA ‘overkill’ in business.
C’mon guys, when will we get a grip on this? I’m Max, and that’s the way I see it!
