THE CULTIVATION OF A GERMAPHOBIC NATION
The American People sit on the edge of the abyss, all because of disinfectants
PART ONE OF TWO
Around about the 1990’s a subtle campaign was launched by Bristol Myers and Johnson & Johnson. This was simply a series of television [public service announcements] suggesting that Americans remember to wash their hands before meals, before leaving the bathroom, and as it has been for hundreds of years. It seemed an innocuous campaign. Nobody paid it too much attention because basically, it just repeated what was common knowledge.
In the 2000’s this campaign was taken up a notch. Now television, radio, and print advertisements pelted us like so many spit wads on the ceiling. They advertised a myriad of hand cleansers, disinfectant sprays and wipes. Products like Lysol Spray and Purell Hand Sanitizer saw noted increases in their business. Slowly but surely, the ‘germaphobification’ of America had begun.
By the 2010’s the clever propagandists were well on their way, turning America into a nation of germaphobes. By and large, Americans were spraying disinfectants on their kitchen and bathroom sinks as well as their bathtubs and showers. This process became a weekly ritual for so many of us.
Mothers packed disinfectant wipes in their kids’ school bags and carried them in their purse for wiping down shopping carts, bannisters, and virtually anything they came in contact with. Success! The United States of Germaphobia. Tens of millions, if not hundreds of millions of Americans were now acutely aware that germs not only exist, but that they are OUT TO KILL YOU! Following the behaviour and admonition of their parents, children grew up a new crop of germaphobes.
