TOO DANGEROUS TO OWN!

According to a study from the Center for Disease Control (CDC), approximately 4.5 million dog bites occur in the United States every year, and 800,000 of those bites require medical care. The U.S. population was approximately 328.2 million people in 2019. That means that a dog bites 1 out of every 73 people.

69% of dog attacks are by Pit Bulls. 63% of these require medical attention. 61% of Pit Bull attacks result in fatality or lifelong medical / psychological distress … CDC Report of March, 2018
------------------------------------------------------------
In a 15-year study period of 2005 through 2019, dogs killed 521 Americans. Pit Bulls contributed to 66% (346) of these deaths. Combined, Pit Bulls and Rottweilers contributed to 76% of the total recorded deaths. The Rottweiler, as with the Pit Bull, is simply ‘too dangerous to own’. In this article we will address the Pit Bull Terrier, known also as simply, ‘Pit Bull’.

Dog attacks requiring immediate medical attention. CDC 2020.12.0
When a Pit Bull attacks, the injury inflicted is often catastrophic, threatening life or quality of life. First responders, such as police officers and firefighters, understand this all too well, as do members of the media who are quick to report these attacks. Ongoing social tensions also keep Pit Bulls in the news. America’s Pit Bull problem is now over 30 years old and has become a literal ‘ticking time bomb’ according to CDC investigator Dr. Trevor Hawkin, DVM.
Doctor Hawkin states, “The alarming trend toward Pit Bull ownership has resulted in a veritable epidemic of dog attacks. Almost every time a Pit Bull attacks someone it’s serious. The results of these attacks nearly always require immediate medical attention. The majority of Pit Bull attacks result in hospitalization or death.”
He goes on to say, “Possession of a Pit Bull presents a greater danger to household members and immediate neighbours than a loaded gun. Whereas a gun requires human action to injure or to kill, a Pit Bull does not. It is always free to act on its own often questionable judgment.”

During this time most lawmakers have been "too afraid" to take breed-specific action to correct the problem. With Americans’ unnaturally strong affinity with dogs [Cynophilia?] many politicians fear backlash from ‘dog lovers’ and other ‘Cynos’ come election time. Due to this failure to act, horrific maulings continue to make the headlines. The problem of legislative hesitation and fear is especially acute in states such as Idaho, Iowa, and Mississippi.
Over half of all media reports regarding Pit Bulls involve police officers shooting these dangerous animals in the line of duty. Since the late 1970's Pit Bulls have found a special place with drug dealers and other criminals. Most especially they are the dog of choice for gang bangers and other violent offenders. Hence, it’s safe to say that the Pit Bull terrier is the breed of choice for criminals. This choice is directly linked to the Pit Bull's selectively bred traits of robust jaw strength, a deadly bite style, tenacity (gameness) and a high tolerance to pain.

Through selective breeding, Pit Bulls have developed enormous jaw strength, as well as a devastating "hold and shake" bite style, designed to inflict the maximum damage possible with the highest chance of fatality on their victims. This bite trait has long delivered winning results in the fighting Pit.

Leading Pit Bull education websites, such as Pit Bull Rescue Central, encourage Pit Bull owners to be responsible and to always carry a "break stick" -- a tool used to pry open a Pit Bull's jaws -- in case their dog "accidentally" gets into a fight or attacks someone. This is true because no other dog breed possesses the Pit Bull's tenacity combined with a "hold and shake" bite style.
One of the most powerful examples of a Pit Bull "not letting go" occurred in an Ohio courtroom: During the Toledo, Ohio v. Paul Tellings trial (Tellings was convicted of violating the City of Toledo's Pit Bull ordinance), Lucas County Dog Warden Tom Skeldon showed a videotape of a tranquilized Pit Bull hanging from a steel cable. The dog is essentially unconscious and still does not release its grip.
At the time of the taping, the Pit Bull was being housed at the Lucas County Animal Shelter. The animal has since been put down. Literally hundreds of communities from coast to coast, and a growing number of foreign countries, have banned or severely restricted possession of these dogs because of the extreme danger that they present.
This article is presented for your information and education. As for me? I like dogs [not Pit Bulls however] but it’s the owner’s with whom I take issue.
I’m Max, and that’s the way I see it!
