THE BREAD & CIRCUS OF BOB DOLE
The body of Bob Dole lies in state in the nation’s capital. So what?
Admittedly, the death of any human being is tragic [at least to someone]. A man who lived to be nearly a hundred and spent over a third of his life [35 years] suckling from the teat of the federal government, has passed away. His reward is the funeral and burial of a king, a tribute to a man who long overstayed his welcome in government and perhaps in life as well.
His life was one mixed with heroic military service and of serving in elected office for far too long. As one who believes strongly in term limits, I cannot salute this man in his death. I cannot see the merit in lowering a flag to half-mast, nor can I see the value in the unbelievable amount of distracting press coverage his death will garner.

It’s a fact that most politicians never receive such a splendid funeral and press unless they are Liberal Republicans or Democrats who long ago outlived their usefulness in public service. A press extravaganza like this one is merely another moment of ‘bread and circus’ meant to placate and distract the American People. In death, Bob Dole has become the very meat of the press’ ‘bread and circus’.
I come not to praise him, but to bury him.
