Brought up without morals, they return to their simian roots

Dateline, same old thing, New York City -- The troop of five simians was caught on camera getting down-and-dirty in their drive to snatch a set of sneakers.  High definition video shows a gang of V.A.B. adolescents descending upon a 15-year-old boy, intent on snatching his sneakers.  In a regressive return to their primal roots they kicked, punched, scratched, and beat the holy hell out of the boy just so they could grab his sneakers.

Joseph Giacalone is a former NYPD sergeant and now a professor of Criminal Justice at the John Jay College of Criminal Justice.  He says, "Here’s the problem with this one, you have a gang assault which is a bail eligible offence, and you have kids that are under the age of 18, so there is just basically nothing you can do to these kids.”  He laments the invulnerability of juveniles, especially minority juveniles.

10th Precinct Officer Bailey Smith adds, "These little shit stains are often contracted by adults to do their dirty work for them.  In a city where 'no cash' bail is the rule, they are often turned around without so much as photographing or fingerprinting.  They're really not booked at all because the precinct desk sergeant writes them a ticket and gives them a hearing date often months away.  It sucks, that's what it does."

Protected by race, age, and politics these Junior V.A.B.s are free to wreak this form of mayhem and havoc with impunity.  Isn't it time we started trying juveniles as adults?  Maybe we need to hold 15-year-olds responsible for their actions and try them as adults, insert them into adult prisons, and let nature take its course.
