THE EXODUS HAS BEGUN IN EARNEST ...
As Beijing closes the noose on Hong Kong, nearly 5 million Hong Kongers are eligible for immediate immigration in the United Kingdom. When the 'Umbrella Revolt' began, Hong Kongers made some very unwise decisions and behaved in some very unwise ways, which cost them what little freedom they already enjoyed.
I am NOT on the side of Beijing, but the intransigence of the Hong Kong revolutionaries did not help things at all. It was the looting, burning, rioting, and overall mayhem which brought down the Communist boots from Beijing. Despite 5 attempts at a reconciliation, the Hong Kong Revolutionaries would not budge.
THEY DIDN'T SPEAK FOR THE EVERYDAY HONG KONGER, ONLY THEMSELVES!
I also have it on good authority that the CIA was behind much of the revolution in an attempt to further destabilise the Chinese government. It was thought that this instability would bring Beijing to the bargaining table and make it easier to gain concessions from them. This didn't go well.
As usual, a small group of extremists ruined it for the majority of Hong Kong. More's the pity.
