I was looking back at my many years abroad, principally in India and China, and I was brought to reflect on true ‘Cancel Culture’. In China especially, the nation lives under a ‘Created Culture’ and cannot see what became of their actual culture.
A student of human nature, and history, I am remarkably familiar with Chinese Classic Culture, the one killed off by Chairman Mao and his thugs. The culture of the Qing Dynasty rings closest to my liking. It was here that civil rights were largely (nobody’s perfect) protected by government. It was here that the right to own property was established and fiercely protected. It was in the Qing Dynasty that common citizens were allowed to have guns.
In 1922 came the literal fall of this dynasty, the forerunner of true Chinese Culture. With bits and pieces added to their culture over 5,000 years of growth and change the Chinese People were of a certain and enviable culture.
Along came the ‘Chinese Cancel Culture’ then called ‘China Dream’ by the late Mao Zi Dong, (that’s Chairman Mao to you Westerners). Books were burned, statues destroyed, every school’s curriculum completely rewritten. Simply speaking out against the ‘new truth’ of ‘China Dream’ brought about punishments ranging from being shunned to being fired to being blacklisted, beaten, or even killed.
It took Mao nearly 50 years of constant and unrelenting assault to bring the generations of new and of the compliant old into line. His ‘China Dream’, although a nightmare, had become the new culture of truth.
I see this in America today, in the same way as was formed by Mao. Public schools and universities have been co-opted. Books have been and are being banned. People are being punished for speaking their minds when that speech goes against the grain of the new “Cancel Culture”. Careers are being lost. Statues and monuments are being destroyed. The media bombards us with their own revisionist history, all under the tutelage of Beijing, China … masters of the ‘Cancel Culture’.
In Canada or Great Britain today one can go to jail for speaking in any not commensurate with the ‘New Speak’ of the ‘Cancel Culture’. People have been banned from entering the UK and Canada for simply speaking their minds and expressing disagreement with the new proletariat.
We’re on the way folks. The slope has never been slipperier. You can either stand up against this or start brushing up on your Chinese.
