ZEUS AND HIS HERD MAY HAVE FOUND SANCTUARY

THE GRASS REALLY IS GREENER

Zeus and his herd have found sanctuary in a national park

Now we have a predicament and let me explain.  Zeus and his herd have been spotted in the Eurimbula National Park, about 45 miles south of Gladstone where they were last sighted.  The Eurimbula offers plenty of fresh water and verdant vegetation for this family of wanderers.  One can easily see why Zeus has led his family here but there exists yet another possibility, a reason if you will, why Zeus has come here.

Herein lays the rub:  Australian law prohibits removing any animals from the reserve.  It likewise prohibits hunting, harming, or harassing them.  It matters not whether native or ‘introduced’ as is the case of Zeus and his 9 heifers.  Park rangers and local officials have issued a stern warning to anyone who tries to extricate these cattle.  Arthur Rogers, General Manager of the park says, “Should anyone try and remove any animals from this park they will be guilty of poaching.  Poaching on a federal preserve is a felony grade crime and we of Parks and Forests would vigorously pursue, arrest, and prosecution any poachers for any reason.

ZEUS MAY BE ‘PROTECTED’ BY LAW

-----------------------------------------------------------------

When Rogers was asked about Zeus in particular, he said, “I’m not really read up on this whole ‘Super Cow’ thing, but it doesn’t matter.  How any animals get into the park is irrelevant because as long as they are here, they are protected.  No exceptions!”  He went on to say, “Furthermore, even if someone is simply taunting, harassing, or otherwise exciting any animals in the park it is viewed with no amount of forgiveness.  The animal population of the park is, in the end, my responsibility and I take my job quite seriously.

Now this is an interesting turn of events.  Do you suppose Zeus has been heading here all along?  I had surmised New South Wales or Victoria with their verdant vegetation and ideal conditions for livestock, especially dairy cattle.  Perhaps I was wrong and maybe Zeus knows more than I do here.

The park would provide the ideal ‘home’ for his herd and an excellent place to give birth to their calves.  It would also be a great place to wean and raise their calves to maturity.  In as little as 6 months from now [about the turn of the year] we could see 3 more sexually active cows in the herd.  Then, who knows about the 6 heifers Zeus purloined on his trek southwards?  Are they already pregnant?  What will be their gestation period producing a genetically engineered calf?  Certainly, time will tell.

IS EURIMBULA TO BECOME ZEUS’ SAFE HAVEN?

------------------------------------------------------------------

We know according to Wilhemina, a farmer near Gladstone who has had close exposure to Zeus and his heifers, that at least 3 of the heifers are pregnant.  More on her experience with Zeus later.

As Wilhemina has described them, they are ‘heavy with calves.”  This means that we will likely add an additional 3 cows to the herd very soon.  With a 90–110-day gestation period and the cattle being ‘on the run’ for over a month it means that birth is sooner than later.  What if they were already pregnant when Zeus took them from their pens in the Rockhampton facility?  How far along were they there then?

THE HERD IS READY TO GROW
